I only got to know Peter in June this year but I consider myself fortunate to have counted him as a friend for a short time, having been a fan of his commentaries since my childhood. It began with an exchange of emails about a mutual friend of ours who I helped put him back in touch with. Then I mentioned that I was about to make my debut as a snooker commentator and asked if he could give me any advice (Peter was a snooker commentator for Eurosport in the early 1990s). He invited me to phone him and we had a lovely half-hour chat. I could tell he wasn't in the best of health but he was kind, encouraging and generous with his advice, as well as being very, very funny. His encouragement helped me hugely and my commentary debut was a success. He went on to give me further feedback and I shall cherish those emails. I learnt from one of the very best. My sincere condolences to his family - the world has lost a top broadcaster and journalist, but more importantly, he was a thoroughly decent man. RIP.
